As we exit the airplane, we are welcomed by a warm blanket of humidity. We are on Koh Samui, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. The plan is to stay here for one night and continue by boat to Koh Pha Ngang tomorrow. We booked a little bungalow room in Chaweng Beach. The room is not much more than a space for three beds, but it is dirt cheap and why stay in your room when you have an incredible backyard fifty meters away?
When I’m looking for my iPad to read a book, I realise that I’ve left it in the plane. This is not something I typically do. Luckily the Bangkok Airways personnel found it before taking off to their next destination. I return to the airport and the iPad is back in my possession. Yay Bangkok Airways!
The food at our resort is amazing and we devour a delicious barracuda steak. The beers keep on coming and we’re having good conversations.
Later that evening we decide to go to a beach party at the Ark Bar. So much fun! The DJ is great and entertainers are dancing and playing with fire. We order buckets of Mai Tai and start a dance party.
Around midnight we manage to lose each other and each one of us has a different story to tell the next morning. As far as we remember...
With a minor hangover I decide to go for a run in the morning. It’s going pretty well considering the amount of alcohol consumed last night and I run as far as the beach stretches. Halfway through the run I figure that it would be nice to dip my head in the water. While being extra careful with a phone in my hand, I totally forget about the headphones in my ears. Boy, do those fitness songs sound different without a bass. That’s just great; stupid mistake number two!
There are many places that offer massages on the beach, so we can make sure to have our daily hour of relaxation. It is so relaxing to hear the waves combined with a Bob Marley song, while jasmine oil is being massaged on your skin.
We love the resort so much that we decide to extend our stay twice. “Hi, we are in room 505. Could we stay for another extra night?” -“OK.” Easy as pie!
The next day I want to book our flights from the islands back to Bangkok (for next week), to catch our flight back to the Netherlands. Somehow I manage to book the flight for the wrong time. “Paid for and confirmed. You’re outta luck!” This is also not something I usually do.
Of course my mistakes are on me. But I typically don’t make these kinds of mistakes. So I blame the island, for forcing daily stupidities on me. Anyway, time to leave!
